Sexual Health & Family Planning Australia (SH&FPA)

SHFPACT is a member of Sexual Health and Family Planning Australia (SH&FPA), a national federation of eight independent state and territory sexual health and family planning organisations

SH&FPA believes that knowledge and freedom of choice in sexual health and family planning is a basic human right.

SH&FPA is the national voice of Sexual Health (SH) and Family Planning Organisations (FPOs) around the country and represents these organisations on sexual and reproductive health issues at national and international levels. Projects are shared between member organisations, with a national secretariat located in Sydney at Family Planning NSW.

SH&FPA maintains a dynamic international program in South East Asia and the Pacific. The major strategies of the program are focused on enhancing the management and delivery of sexual and reproductive health care and education delivered by or with local organisations in a sustainable setting. AusAID funds most of this work.

International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF)

SH&FPA is a member of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) , a global network of member organisations that provide services and advocacy in the area of sexual and reproductive health, in 180 countries.

IPPF:

  • believes that sexual and reproductive rights should be internationally recognised as human rights and therefore guaranteed for everyone.
  • encourages individuals, women in particular, to take control of their reproductive lives.
  • promotes equality between men and women, aiming to eliminate gender biases, especially those that threaten the well-being of women and girls.
  • Above all we promote choices.

Approximately 32 million visits a year are made to over 58,000 IPPF facilities worldwide. The services provided for these users include counselling, gynaecological care, HIV-related services, diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections, infertility services, mother and child health, emergency contraception and abortion-related services.
