SHFPACT’s Schools Disability Program supports the growth and learning of students with disabilities in Canberra, with regard to their social safety, and sexual and reproductive health needs.

Through the provision of one-to-one education and workshops to people with disabilities, SHFPACT aims to support positive sexual health choices and strengthen preventative approaches.

What support does the program provide?

Students are provided with a range of skills to enable them to better manage their relationships and interactions with others, especially their peers. Students can be supported individually, in small groups or within their integrated class, and can access SHFPACT’s Schools Disability Program within their school setting or at SHFPACT’s premises in Civic.

We encourage a partnership approach which invites parents, carers and/or workers to be involved, so that new knowledge can be reinforced in the home and work environment.

Information sessions and individual support is offered to parents via phone or by appointment, and SHFPACT’s Library & Resource Centre has a range of books, videos and pamphlets for parents and/or carers of children with special needs.

Are there any costs for accessing the program?

SHFPACT’s Schools Disability Program is available free of charge to all ACT schools students with disabilities.
SHFPACT’s Schools Disability Program is supported with funding from the ACT Department of Education & Training.

Who can access the program?

Students (or parents, carers and teachers of students) who have been assessed as having a disability. This may include students in Special Schools, Learning Support Units, Integration Programs and  Autism-specific Units

Does the program support teachers & STAs?

The program supports teachers by providing professional development opportunities, curriculum support and access to resources and tools designed to educate young people with disabilities in areas of sexual & reproductive health. Participation in training programs by workers and/or carers may attract a fee.

What topics can be covered?

SHFPACT’s Schools Disability Program tailors all education sessions to the needs of the student/class and the school.
