How do you have intercourse?

Pregnancy

Intercourse means penis-in-vagina sex or penis-in-anus sex. There are many different ways to have intercourse. I will focus here on penis-in-vagina sex - intercourse between a male and a female.

Before having intercourse, you should make sure that both you and your partner are happy to have intercourse. Never be pressured into having sex when you don't want to. And never pressure someone else into having sex.

Also, both partners must be sexually aroused. The male partner will need an erection (a hard penis) for it to go inside the female's vagina. The female will need to sexually aroused so that she is lubricated ('wet'). When a woman feels aroused or sexy, the walls of her vagina respond by giving off a liquid that wets the vagina and makes it easier for the penis to enter. If the woman is not aroused, then intercourse is likely to be less pleasurable and more uncomfortable.

The woman and the man are more likely to be sexually aroused if there has been some kind of sexual stimulation before intercourse happens. E.g., if she and her partner have been kissing, stroking each other, touching each others' genitals or doing oral sex. (Oral sex on the woman is especially good for lubrication, as it adds saliva (spit) and makes things wetter.) It can also be a good idea to use a sexual lubricant to make the man's penis and the woman's vagina even slipperier.

Intercourse is a very effective way to get a woman pregnant, and to pass on a sexually transmitted infection from male to female or female to male. So you also need to make sure that this can't happen. The easiest and safest way is by using condoms.

There are many different ways in which a woman and a man can have intercourse. Some of the common positions are;

  • The woman lies on her back with her legs apart, and the man lies on top of her with his legs together between her legs. (This is sometimes called the 'missionary position'.)
  • The man lies on his back with his legs together, and the woman lies on top of him with her legs apart. The woman can also bring her knees up so that she is kneeling on the man.
  • The woman and man lie on their sides facing each other. The man's legs are between the woman's legs, or with one leg either side of one of her legs.
  • The man sits up with his legs straight out in front of him, and the woman sits on him facing him.
  • The woman is on her hands and knees, and the man kneels behind her facing the same way, with his penis entering her vagina from behind. (This is sometimes called 'doggy style'.)

There are many books which explore the different ways in which people can have sex. Some relevant books are;

  1. K.I.S.S. Guide to sex, by Annie Hooper (Dorling Kindersley, Australia, 2000).
  2. Sexwise, by Janet Hall (Random House, Australia, 2000).
  3. Guide to getting it on, by Paul Joannides (Goofy Foot Press, USA, 2000).
  4. Hot sex, by Tracey Cox (Bantam, Australia, 1998).
