I'm on the pill

Written by SHFPACT. Posted in About Sex

I'm on the pill and after I have finished my period and start taking the pills again, am I infertile as soon as I start taking it or do I have to wait a week or something?

If you have been on the pill for a while and take it every day you should be safe from pregnancy at all times. There is no need to wait before, during or after your period before having sex.

Your uncertainty may be due to advice about taking the pill for the first time, or starting the pill again after a break from taking it. When starting oral contraceptive pills you may be safe immediately or there may be a need to wait a while before being protected from pregnancy. This depends on the type of pill you are taking. Advice about this should be explained fully by the nurse or doctor when you first get the pills.

It is best to take your pill at roughly the same time each day, to help you remember to take it (e.g. after breakfast). If you do forget but remember later and take it within 12 hours of your usual time you should still be safe. If it is past 12 hours, take it, but also make sure you use other contraception (e.g. condoms) as well as the pill for the following week.
