Puberty Workshops for Primary Students
Puberty Workshops (Primary School Years 3-6)
Puberty is a significant time of growth and change that all humans experience, and education on the topic has many positive impacts for young people. SHFPACT offers a range of student workshops to complement and support the work already being undertaken by schools, teaching staff, parents and carers.
SHFPACT Puberty workshops are age and stage appropriate and informed by the Health and Physical Education subject area of the Australian Curriculum (Version 9). Our educators utilise a variety of educational experiences to engage students and assist them to explore the physical, social/relationship and emotional changes that occur during adolescence, as well as various strategies to better understand and manage these changes.
All student workshops are of 3hrs duration and are usually delivered as two 90 minute sessions on the same day. Student workshops are charged at $25 per student (or a discounted rate of $45 per student if two workshops are booked together for the same Year group).
STUDENT WORKSHOPS - Years 3 and 4
The Physical Changes of Puberty
This workshop provides introductory information about the main physical changes of puberty (including the most common first signs). It teaches the names and basic functions of private body parts and provides an overview of how reproductive systems work including where babies come from and how they develop during pregnancy.
Gender Stereotypes, Friendships and Consent
This workshop provides the basis for later education around consent and respectful relationships by exploring the impact of stereotypes (particularly related to gender). Consent is discussed within a protective behaviours framework, and respectful relationships and boundaries are explored within the context of friendships.
STUDENT WORKSHOPS - Years 5 and 6
The Physical Changes of Puberty
This workshop provides detailed information on the physical changes of puberty and how to manage them. It provides more detailed information on how reproductive systems work and change during puberty and introduces some of the emotional and relationship changes that are often experienced during adolescence.
Consent and Respectful Relationships
This workshop builds on prior protective behaviours work by exploring the context that determines appropriate and inappropriate types of touch. It encourages students to develop a more detailed and nuanced understanding of boundaries and consent including different emotional responses and the capacity to develop and practice effective communication strategies. It encourages students to think more deeply about the qualities of respectful relationships and to identify potentially problematic behaviours within relationships.
PARENT INFORMATION EVENING Cost $390
We encourage schools to offer our parent information evening for a range of reasons including that a whole of school approach, engaging parents, provides better outcomes for the students. The 90 minute session provides parents with information on the content of our student workshops including tips on how to prepare their children for the sessions and to engage with them afterwards. The session also covers some more general information about comprehensive relationships and sexuality education and how to navigate young people’s changing relationship with technology.
