IUD Insertion Workshop
This course is suited to experienced GPs, Nurse Practitioners, and Midwives who have a desire to provide IUD insertions for their patients and have at least 10 patients per year who require IUD insertion. May be required to demonstrate evidence of prior contraceptive learning and clinical experience.

Medical Practitioners
Eligibility Criteria
- Registered Medical Practitioner with at least two years of postgraduate experience.
- Adequate Professional Indemnity Insurance (the sole responsibility of the participant).
Required Skills and Experience
Participants should already have:
- Extensive experience in contraception consultation and counselling.
- Clinical experience in contraception and gynaecology, either in general practice, a hospital (Obstetrics & Gynaecology), or a sexual and reproductive health service.
- Well-developed speculum and bimanual pelvic examination skills.
- One of the following:
- Completion of an FPAA Certificate in Sexual and Reproductive Health
- RANZCOG Certificate in Women’s Health / Associate Procedural Training
- An equivalent qualification/ certificate
Nurse Practitioners and Endorsed Midwives
Eligibility Criteria
- Registered Nurse Practitioner or endorsed midwife with at least two years of postgraduate experience.
- Adequate Professional Indemnity Insurance (the sole responsibility of the participant).

Participants should already have:
- Extensive experience in contraception consultation and counselling.
- Clinical experience in contraception and gynaecology, either in general practice, a hospital (Obstetrics & Gynaecology), or a sexual and reproductive health service.
- Well-developed speculum and bimanual pelvic examination skills.
- Completion of the Well Women’s Screening Course (SHFPACT) , including clinical placement, to demonstrate proficiency in speculum examination or equivalent.
- One of the following:
- Completion of the theory component of the FPAA Certificate in Sexual and Reproductive Health
- Or equivalent
Registered Nurses and Midwives
Eligibility Criteria
- Registered Nurse or Midwife with current AHPRA registration.
- Adequate Professional Indemnity Insurance.
- IUD insertion must fall within the individual’s scope of practice and be supported by their workplace.
Required Education and Clinical Experience
Participants should have:
- Extensive experience in contraception consultation and counselling.
- Well-developed speculum and bimanual pelvic examination skills.
- Clinical experience in contraception and gynaecology, either in general practice, a hospital (Obstetrics & Gynaecology), or a sexual and reproductive health service.
- Successfully completed the Well Women’s Screening Course (SHFPACT), including clinical placement, to demonstrate proficiency in speculum examination or equivalent
- One of the following:
- Completed the Reproductive and Sexual Health for Nurses and Midwives course (FPNSW or SHV)
- Or equivalent (please list)
Course Components
- Pre-Activity Readings and questionnaire
- Theory component (3.5 hours) with simulation IUD procedure practice on pelvic models
- 3x 3-hour clinical sessions, to undertake supervised IUD procedures
- Post activity readings and reflection
Date of Theory Component:
- Saturday 7 February - Full
- Friday 3 July - Full
Clinical Training Component: Our IUD Training Clinic is held only on Tuesday afternoons. Dates will be arranged individually for participants after completion of Theory Component.
Aim of Activity
The aim of this activity is to equip GPs with the knowledge and skills to counsel patients regarding the use of IUDs, to perform IUD insertion in their practices, and to be able to minimise risks and manage complications.

Learning Outcomes
1. Advise patients of the advantages and disadvantages of the IUDs available in Australia to patients in order to facilitate informed decision making regarding contraceptive selection.
2. Assess a patient’s medical suitability for use of IUDs, and of which type of IUD
3. Determine the appropriate timing of initiation of IUD use, taking into account individual patient circumstances
4. Generate a plan of action for management of patients experiencing complications of IUDs.
5. Perform competent insertion and removal of IUDs
